SHAME IS FOR BEGINNERS explores words used to describe gay men. It includes a short looped video that reflects on how technology mediates desire for men seeking other men, a series of 6 self-portraits, and two vinyl text pieces. Creating visually appealing images out of words used to mock him empties the value (or shame) these words hold.

The show has 9 works. It begins with a vinyl text piece called ‘opening’. It is followed by a grouping of self-portraits that cause the viewer to feel as though they are on display. ‘Online dating’ is a 10 second looped video that will be projected on the wall in between the sets of self-portraits. The show ends with the larger vinyl piece called ‘that’s so gay’.
